Anyone applying to a US undergraduate programme. Many US schools are now test-optional, but a strong SAT score remains the single most useful score for African applicants — it carries weight in admissions and in merit-aid decisions.

American College Testing

US undergraduate admissions test — the alternative to the SAT.

Anyone applying to US undergrad. Universities accept either SAT or ACT; you don't need both. The ACT has a Science section the SAT does not, and is generally more time-pressured. Pick whichever you score better on after a free practice test of each.

Test of English as a Foreign Language

English-language proficiency test administered by ETS, US-oriented.

Duration: ~2 hr (TOEFL iBT)

Score range: 0–120

Should I take this?→

Most undergrad and graduate programmes require an English-proficiency score from international applicants. Schools where English is the medium of instruction (most West African systems including Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, etc.) often waive this — confirm with each school before paying for the test.

IELTSUndergrad + Grad

International English Language Testing System

English-proficiency test, UK / Commonwealth-leaning, accepted globally.

Duration: ~2 hr 45 min

Score range: 0.0–9.0

Same situation as TOEFL — required by most universities for international applicants whose first language isn't English (and often waived if your country's medium of instruction is English). Schools in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland tend to prefer IELTS; US schools accept both.

Graduate Record Examinations

Graduate-school admissions test for most US Master's and PhD programmes.

Most US graduate programmes outside business school. Many programmes have gone GRE-optional post-2020 — check each programme's page before paying. Required for the majority of funded PhD programmes.

The graduate business-school admissions test — for MBA programmes.

Anyone applying to an MBA. Many MBA programmes now accept the GRE in place of the GMAT — if you're also considering non-business graduate programmes, the GRE is the more flexible choice. The GMAT remains the standard at top US business schools.
