What it is

WASSCE is the standardised end-of-secondary-school exam administered by WAEC across Anglophone West Africa. Your results — both the official certificate and the provisional online check — are accepted by US universities as your high-school graduation credential.

Why it matters

It is the single strongest indicator of your academic ability that US admissions officers will see. Strong WASSCE grades (A1-B3 in core subjects) carry significant weight, especially when paired with a transcript that shows year-on-year improvement.

How to get it

  1. 1

Sit the exam in your final year of SHS — most students do this in May/June.

  2. 2

Once results are released, visit the WAEC online checker (ghana.waecdirect.org) and enter your card details to view your provisional results.

  3. 3

Print the provisional online results page — many universities accept this for the application stage.

  4. 4

Once the official certificate is issued by WAEC, request a certified copy from your school or directly from WAEC.

  5. 5

Scan both the provisional results and the official certificate at high resolution. Submit whichever the school requests.

Tips & best practices

  • You do NOT need A-Levels, IB, or any post-secondary credential to apply. WASSCE is the credential.
  • If your official results are not yet out at application time, the provisional online results are usually accepted.
  • Predicted grades from your school can also be used by some universities if even the provisional is not ready.
  • Strong grades in your major-related subjects matter most. If you want to study Engineering, A1 in Mathematics matters more than A1 in Religious Studies.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Submitting low-resolution phone photos instead of proper scans — universities will reject these.
  • Forgetting that the certificate alone is not enough — you usually need a transcript covering all 3 SHS years too.
  • Waiting until the official certificate arrives to apply. Use the provisional results and apply on time.

Ghana-specific notes

The Ghanaian SHS is 3 years; many US universities expect a 4-year high school. This sometimes triggers a request for your JHS3 (grade 9) results — see the JHS Transcript guide. WAEC also administers the WASSCE in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia, with the same recognition by US universities. Kenyan students use the KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) instead — same purpose, different exam board (kcse-results.knec.ac.ke).
